Long Live the Underground! at MoMA

Film Screening Series : September 23 – October 8, 2026

Coming up at the Museum of Modern Art: Long Live the Underground! Celebrating Six Decades of the Film-Makers’ Cooperative and Millennium Film Workshop, a survey program running September 23 through October 8!

The Film-Makers' Cooperative and Millenium Film Workshop both started in the 1960s, a time of deep social unrest and cultural change, and they were crucial to the development of the underground film scene. Sixty years later, they’re still supporting experimental film and the thousands of filmmakers who’ve shown work through them. The series at MoMA looks back on that history across nine programs: Anticipation of the (Opening) Night; Roots of the NY Underground; Make Love, Not War; Seventies Structures; Cinemas of Transgression; Quotidian Pleasures; New York No Story; Diaries, Notes, and Sketches; and The Material Is the Message.

Carolee Schneemann’s Viet-Flakes (1962–67) screens as part of the Make Love, Not War program on September 25 at 6:30 pm and October 3 at 4:30 pm.
